Obwohl in der üblichen Definition der Konsequenzialismus ein Bestandteil des Utilitarismus ist, will Jacobson zeigen, dass Utilitarismus ohne Konsequenzialismus logisch möglich ist und dass genau dies die Position von Mill gewesen sei. In der gängigen Interpretation sei ein wichtiger Aspekt von Mills Theorie übergangen worden, der seinen unorthodoxen Utilitarismus gerade besonders interessant mache.
