Brian Leiter zitiert eine interessante Passage von Jeff McMahan, in der dieser konstatiert, dass die Philosophie, und speziell die Ethik, in den letzten Jahren gute Fortschritte gemacht hat. Es kommt heute nicht mehr darauf an, ein persönliches philosophisches System zu verteidigen und die interessanten Fragen dadrunter abzuhandeln. Stattdessen würden einzelne Fragestellungen sehr detailliert behandelt und in einem kollektiven Unternehmen (der Diskussion) viel gründlicher beantwortet als dies eine einzelne Person je leisten könnte:
“Unlike many other disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, which in recent years were seduced by bad French philosophy into a lot of silly “post-modern” theorizing that exposed them to derision and reduced them to irrelevance, analytic philosophy is flourishing. … philosophy has become more of a collective endeavour than it was in the past … When the results of the individual efforts are combined, we may achieve a collective product that exceeds in depth, intricacy, and sophistication what any individual could have produced by working on the larger problem in isolation.” (Jeff McMahan, zitiert bei Brian Leiter)
